Mitchell’s Story

Mitchell

At 38 years old Mitchell was well known in Swindon as a local ‘hard nut’ and heavy drug user. His reputation intimidated people, and when he came to Threshold he admitted this made it impossible for him to get any sympathetic help. After agreeing some ground rules, Mitchell signed up to the Outreach contract.

It became clear Mitchell could scarcely read or write, and had avoided filling in the very forms that would help him live a normal life. A major incentive for Mitchell to rehabilitate was the desire to rebuild relations with his family, particularly his children. Persisting with a strict regime with Outreach, we were able to secure accommodation for him. This, with the methadone to replace his dependence on drugs and alcohol, has enabled him to stay clean, and visit his family regularly again. Mitchell’s reputation presents him with extra pressures from the many dealers on the street who would like to see him fail: rehabilitation is bad for business!
