Ruth's Story

Ruth

Threshold first met 18 year old Ruth at the local soup run. We were able to offer her immediate accommodation, and encouraged Ruth to come to our Day Centre to discuss her many challenges.

Ruth came from an abusive background, beaten up by her alcoholic father. She had also suffered at the hands of an uncle, with an alcoholic mother who felt unable to intervene. We were able to refer Ruth to SPEAR - a self-help group - to get help to deal with her self-harming, and we arranged support to get her past her alcohol issues.

Ruth has come to use the Day Centre as a source of sympathetic but practical support for challenges such as her abusive boyfriend, pregnancy advice, and her feelings of self-loathing.

In each case or outreach service could signpost towards sources of help, but more importantly we could take an overview of Ruth’s entire situation and ensure each element of the support she received complemented the others.
