Homelessness in Swindon
Threshold estimates there are currently around 100 single homeless
and up to 15 people regularly sleeping rough in Swindon. This makes Swindon’s homelessness problem the highest in the South West.
The harsh reality: homelessness in Swindon is growing
It is widely acknowledged by professionals working in the field that despite positive work being done by all agencies involved, homelessness is still a very real issue, and continues to be a growing one.
Particularly pressing is the need to stem the steady rise in youth homelessness that has been the trend for the last 5 years. In most cases this can be attributed to an increase in family relationship breakdowns, remarriages, family displacement, substance misuse and behavioural problems. Link all these together and the result is increased levels of anti-social behaviour combined with growing youth homelessness.
"Family breakdown: job loss: psychological and/or physical abuse: drug, alcohol or substance misuse: deficient learning skills: poor coping ability – all these are major causes of homelessness in Swindon."
