It is very hard to protect yourself during the pandemic when you are homeless, unable to wash yourself frequently, clean your hands sufficiently or find somewhere to safely self-isolate. This is further compounded when usual support services are restricted or withdrawn. The future of Swindon’s homeless, who are mostly temporarily accommodated during the pandemic is not yet clear. Although we hope many will be provided accommodation, for various reasons, a substantial number will likely be forced to return to the streets at some point soon if, for example, they do not accept assistance to return to their ‘home town’ on the basis of the local connection criteria or through having no recourse to public funds.
For those rough sleepers that may be accommodated then there will be immediate
and ongoing support needs that will not be met without increased service provision
from charities and volunteer groups within Swindon.
The generosity and support of Swindonian’s for the work being undertaken at
present to care for our homeless friends is inspiring. Threshold would have struggled
to achieve what we have so far without the significant support provided us by
established volunteer and charitable organisations, local businesses, and individuals
who have made private donations.
There is a real opportunity to significantly change the landscape of homelessness
within our town. What is certain is that with your support during this most uncertain
time than any gift you make, large or small, will make a real difference to Threshold’s
ability to help the homeless during this most challenging time and in the times to
come. At Threshold, we remain at the frontline of homeless support in Swindon,
